Fore Grips For The M-4 Carbine
Since Y2K fore grips have made a tremendous comeback with the armies of the World. They had generally fallen out of favour in the early 1940s with a few exceptions; for example Romanian and Hungarian AKs. Fore grips regained their popularity due to their increased control in the type of combat predominating in the GWoT. This is essential in close quarters battle, but it also offers other advantages. Fore grips are less tiring to hold than horizontal fore ends and help manipulate the weapon in close combat. In sustained fire fore ends can become very hot – fore grips protect your hand from that. Fast follow-up shots are enabled and the fore grips generally make it easier to incorporate flashlight or laser controls.
Troy have a well deserved reputation for excellence in design and rugged precision engineering of their firearms accessories. The Troy Combat Grip is no exception. This vertical grip is manufactured from aluminium for immense strength and offers bands of chequering for a supurior grip, even in wet conditions. A Type III hard anodized finish can be supplied in black or matte earth. The grip includes a dry storage compartment for batteries etc. and can be assembled in stubby or full length configuration. The Troy Combat Grip is clamped to the rail via stainless steel cross bolt and held in place by a full length locking bar and rear cross bars to keep it securely in place. This is a high quality unit, but one of the more expensive options and aluminium can be unkind to bare skin in extreme temperatures.
Magpul offer less expensive, but well thought out alternatives to the Troy Combat Grip in their MVG and RVG grips. Both are constructed from polymer which is chemical and rust resistant, very tough and available in OD green, foliage green, dark earth and black. They have a more rectangular format than the Troy, optimized for the ‘thumb break’ hold and offer stippled panels on the side and grooves fore and aft. The Magpul MVG fore grip or MOE Vertical Grip is designed to fit Magpul’s proprietary MOE fore end or that of the Bushmaster Adaptive Combat rifle – it is not designed to fit rails. The Magpul RVG or Rail Vertical Grip is the same but clamps onto any MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail.
Not everyone shares the assumption that vertical is the way to go. Magpul have always emphasized superior ergonomics in their products and the Magpul AFG Angled Fore Grip offers a different and very well designed alternative to vertical grips. The angled format of the Magpul VFG is less fatiguing than vertical grips, using the upturned palm to support the weapon with the thumb comfortably aligned along the barrel. This puts the hand close to the line of recoil offering superior control and is less likely to trap the hand against an obstruction. Two models are offered. The Magpul VFG 1 and the shorter, narrower Magpul VFG 2 for situations when rail space is limited. Neither will obstruct magazine changes on AK type weapons. The Magpul grips have the additional advantage of being light.
